Bikes and public transport
To get the best out of your bike sometimes you might want to combine cycling with public transport. Here is our handy guide to mixing the two.
And check out our Parking section for detailed information about where you can park your bike at public transport stops and stations.
Bikes are allowed free of charge on most trains at most times of day. Although, there’s usually a limit on how many and you may need to make a bike reservation (generally only available in stations or over the telephone).
Visit the National Rail website for more information on bikes and trains. From this site you will also be able to view the cycle policies of the various Train Operating Companies across the UK and cycle storage facilities at stations.
Folding bikes are generally allowed on all trains as they’re classed as luggage. You can also take bikes onto trains in bike bags - although conditions apply (see http://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/community/how-to/bike-rail-commuting ) and this is unlikely to be practical for regular journeys such as commuting.
Useful information can be found in the Cycling by Train pdf
To find out what facilities are at your station go to http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations
Local OperatorsArriva Trains Wales Cross Country Trains East Midlands Trains Northern Rail Virgin Trains Transpennine Express
TramsOnly folding bikes are allowed on the Metrolink system and these must be fully covered - see Metrolink FAQs
However you could still bike to/from your nearest stop. Go to http://www.metrolink.co.uk/stationinfo/ to see what facilities are at your stop.
Bikes are not allowed on buses, although folding bikes should be accepted.
Parking information is included on our maps. A few bus stations have lockers available as part of the BLUC scheme.
